Photo 2 Nov As delicious as that lobster may look, we don’t realize that it comes at a price. Honestly, it may fall under the marketing schemes of various “help better the world” plots, but it really is heartbreaking to hear the responses that people these days have.
For us to enjoy our mouth watering, savory lobsters, people of Honduras and probably other third world, completely underdeveloped countries risk their lives to fish them for us. 1 out of 4 lobster divers die or get paralyzed on the job, and there’s no way around it because this gives the highest pay.
However, there’s even shows based around the most dangerous jobs created around the world… or at least in the states. However, once the information for problems abroad are known, for example Nike and it’s sweat shop workers, then people began to care.
We were talking about this case in class, and people could actually argue the fact that the lobster diving economy can be considered an efficient market. When people have to risk their lives to feed their family money… how can that be considered an efficient market? Not to say that I have the biggest heart in the world here, but any person with an ounce of care about other people rather than their own egotistical selves will see that you can’t say that the lobster diving industry is an efficient market. Sure the workers get paid for the risk.. if you can even say that, but more than that, they’re doing it so that they can put food in their families’ mouths. They don’t have an ample supply of jobs that we have, and go to expensive snotty private schools, and live in apartments with running water and electricity.
I am all of that, but I have at least some heart to know that people dying just to make money is not an “efficient market” any way you put it. It is absolutely disgusting sometimes what society has produced these days. Yes I’m a produce of society, but not enough to care solely about my needs and not care that people are dying just so that I can have a happy meal.
It’s really ridiculous how “business” people can become so heartless. Finance world is seen as the center of the world markets, yet the people that run it seem to only care about themselves. It truly is scary what our world is coming to. When the only way to truly move someone to at least act like they care is money.
